eMatrix Sublative Rejuvenation: Clear Skin for Everyone

Body Beautiful Spa is one of the first spas in Phoenix to offer the Sublative Rejuvenation treatment using the Syneron eMatrix system; an innovative, energy based technology that provides radiant, clear skin with no down time.

This treatment uses fractional bi-polar radio frequency to penetrate through the skin allowing more energy beneath the surface of the skin, in order to maximize collagen production, improving wrinkles, tone, texture, and minimizing the appearance of scars for all skin tones and all skin types. Sublative Rejuvenation is the "all-natural" approach to enhancing your youthfulness. Unlike other non-aggressive cosmetic treatments such as Botox, fillers, or chemical peels, Sublative Rejuvenation works from the inside out by stimulating cell regrowth. The results from Sublative Rejuvenation last longer and can be further enhanced with yearly maintenance treatments.

In typical Body Beautiful fashion we want you to look great without breaking the bank so until the end of July we are offering the eMatrix treatment for just $249 per treatment per area (face, neck, or decollate)! So hurry and schedule your consultation now!

You CAN Love the Sun (if you just do this)

We love the sun. Everyone enjoys a day at the beach or lounging by the pool but with all the new technology and research today we are becoming more and more aware of the effects sun exposure has on us. To protect our skin and our health we need to educate ourselves on the dangers of sun exposure and the protective measures we should take.

Sun Exposure 101
The sun emits various forms of energy such as ultraviolet light, visible light, and radio waves. Thank fully, most of these forms of energy are filtered out by our earth’s atmosphere but the few who make their way in, can still have harmful effects. Ultraviolet (UV) light is a major contributing factor to skin aging. Whether through natural sunshine or artificial tanning beds, research shows that exposure to UV light has a cumulative effect that can increase wrinkles, compromise the immune system, and increase your risk for cancer. The two UV wavelengths that do permeate our atmosphere are:

UVB rays which are shorter, more powerful rays that affect the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and are responsible for the sunburns we feel when our skin is unprotected. UVB rays can affect our immune systems and cause the most deadly form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.

UVA rays, though longer than and not as powerful as UVB rays, are believed to penetrate more deeply into the skin, causing damage to collagen and cells that are in the dermis. UVA rays are more prevalent in tanning beds and can cause skin tanning, age spots, and wrinkling of the skin.

Sun Protection
Sun Protection Factor or SPF, came about in the 70’s as a rating system referring to the amount of protection a sunscreen provides from the UVB rays that cause sunburn. For example, if you would normally burn in the sun in 10 minutes, a sunscreen with SPF 15 allows you to be in the sun 15 times longer or, in other words, for 150 minutes without being burned.

Research shows SPF only partially protects us during sun exposure. The sufficiency of protection depends on several factors, skin type, exposure time, amount applied, frequency of reapplication and the types of activities done outdoors. We must also be aware that SPF does not normally protect against UVA’s rays. It is important to monitor your time in the sun and apply enough sunscreen to have adequate protection.

• Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, applying generously to all exposed areas at least 15 to 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Cloudy days are no exception!

• Reapply sunscreen every two hours or as needed, especially after swimming or sweating.

• Wear protective clothing, a hat that covers all of your face and neck, and sunglasses with UV protection.

• Do not use sunscreen that has expired because the ingredients can lose their effectiveness and decrease your protection.

Our skin is our largest organ and the most vulnerable. While it can be difficult to balance our need to be outdoors and the effects of UV exposure, we all have a common desire: to protect our skin and reduce aging and the negative effects of the sun. Researchers are working hard to develop a SPF that will block all harmful light but until then we must all remember to wear sunscreen and monitor our exposure to ensure healthy skin inside and out.

Sunburn Do’s and Don'ts

Sunscreen is always a DO but from time to time we forget to apply some before heading outside. Here are some do’s and don’ts if you find yourself a little red.

Do:
  • Aloe!!! In Arizona, Aloe plants are common and a natural soothing remedy for sunburns. Refrigerate or freeze a few leaves and when you’re in need of some relief, remove the top layer of the leaf and apply to the skin.
  • Soaking in a lukewarm bath with a few drops of chamomile, lavender or tea tree oil can help speed up the healing process.
  • Puncture a Vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents onto peeling skin. Vitamin E is essential to skin health, and it supports the skins natural healing process.
  • Moisturize! A moisturizer will not prevent peeling, but will help relieve the irritation of dry, flaky skin.

Don’t:
  • Pick or scratch peeling skin. While it may be tempting to pull the peeling areas off, this can seriously damage your skin, leading to bleeding and scarring.
  • Take a hot water bath, it drains the skin of its natural oils. Warms baths of lukewarm water are milder and causes less damage to the skin.
  • Forget to apply sunscreen the next time you’re out! Stay out of the sun during Peak UV Radiation times such as during mid-day 11:00am-2:00pm.
Try this (available at Body Beautiful Spa):
Skin Script Sheer Protection SPF 30
  • Provides UVA and UVB sun protection
  • Ideal for daily wear
  • Lightly moisturizes and protects the skin
Active Ingredients:
  • Zinc Oxide (ZinClear™) (13.5%) – Zinc Oxide is a safe and non-irritating UV absorbing material
  • Aleurites Moluccano Seed Oil (Kukui Nut Oil) – High in the essential fatty acids linoleic and linolenic acids. These acids are vital for the metabolism of healthy skin. Kukui nut oil is easily absorbed by the skin. It soothes irritated skin.
  • Porphyra Umbilicalis (Red Algae) Extract A natural UVA-screening compound from sea algae to protect the skin against photoaging.

Men and the Spa

Men now make up nearly a third of all spa-goers, according to the International Spa Association. Spa Finder reported that male attendance in spas has increased nearly 900% in the last 4 years. Although men like to maintain a rough and tough demeanor they too have a desire to be confident in their appearance. Men have now broadened their interests beyond the basic massage and into mani & pedi’s, facials and even waxing! Spas everywhere are designing services and package for their male clientele only. The benefits of these services for men go beyond personal satisfaction. Where women see a day at the spa as a luxury, men now see it as a necessity; massage and facial to relief the stress from golfing in the sun etc. It becomes a tool for success in their everyday life.

Why They Need It

Men and women may have different skin types but the basic rules still apply. Cleanse, exfoliate, tone, restore and build and protect. A daily regimen based on this rules along with monthly visits to the spa for facials and even microdermabrasion sessions, is the key to healthy, clear male skin. The act of shaving is very harsh on the skin causing irritation, redness and even small cuts just waiting to be filled with the pollutants in our air. A stressful work day combined with sitting at a desk, wearing a heavy suit and even shaking various hands is the perfect combination for a sweaty, germy, stressed out body and mind. Men needed their down time too but don’t always have the time.

The Perfect Antidote

Men may not find all that a spa has to offer their cup of tea but there are a few services and products that can be a great ally in quest for a healthy, confident body inside and out. A package of services is the best way to go, all services you need at once, for one price.

1.Facial- a deep clean nourished and refreshed face and neck. Opt for the Microdermabrasion every once in a while for an intense exfoliation and complete hydration.
2.Deep Tissue Massage- for releasing the tension caught from your neck and shoulders to your lower back, from a hard day’s work. Making business deals on the golf course to sitting in meetings all day can wreak havoc on your body leaving you feeling tired and stiff.
3.Waxing- Intimidating we know but effective in removing all cave man like features for an extended period of time. Women love well groomed man and a little manscaping never hurt anyone!
4.Pedicures- for healthier, pain free feet no fluff or frills. Taking care of your feet is not typically a priority for men but that doesn’t mean they don’t need it. A regular pedicure is a great preventative measure for ingrown toenails, calluses and fungal infections.

The Bottom Line

No more judgments or assumptions. The spa is a gender neutral place of relaxation and renewal. Still a little skeptical men? Take the lady in your life with you, a win-win situation for you. She’ll be happy you have a romantic side and you will leave asking yourself “why didn’t I do this sooner”! Trust us it’s worth it!

Fountain of Youth

Spa originates from the Latin word spargere, meaning to pour forth, scatter or sprinkle. Native Americans, Persians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all believed in the curative powers of mineral waters. Their bathing rituals or ceremonies performed in a particular spring, well, or rivers were thought to evoke physical and spiritual purification.

While modern day spas have significantly evolved since pre-historic times, at Body Beautiful Spa, we’ve always believed in “Salus Per Aquam,” Latin for “health through water.” It should be no surprise that we are drawn to water’s nurturing effervescence in our desire to bathe, swim, soak and heal. Every living cell in our body is made up of water and surrounded by water. Every one of our body's tissues and organs, as well as our body's daily sustaining process, such as thinking, nerve function, blood circulation, digestion, and elimination, requires water in order to function properly. Skin is intricately tied to the overall health of your body. When your body is properly hydrated, you'll look better and feel better.

Dehydration leads to so many unpleasantries in your body from dry skin to over worked kidneys possibly leading to kidney stones and even urinary tract infections. A great way to monitor you hydration is to look at your urine. If it isn’t clear, you’re not drinking enough water! Exercise is a compliment to water hydration. During exercise the body sweats and the water your rehydrate with penetrates deep through the skin, tissues and into the bloodstream. Here the water’s healing benefits are in action eliminating toxins and stress, leaving your body clean inside and out. Dehydrated skin can also lead to signs of premature aging eventually leading to wrinkles, and if it’s not treated properly, it has the potential of causing some health conditions internally as well as externally. Remember, 6-8 eight ounce glasses of water a day but for those who workout or spend a good amount of time outside need to increase that amount. Increased water output requires increased water input.

Here in Arizona the environmental effects of our dry heat can be very damaging to our skin. Proper skin care is essential. A quality anti-aging serum, a dehydration mask, as well as an enriching moisturizer in your skincare regimen, in addition to regular moisturizing facials and body wraps, can make all the difference.

Your Skin Care Secret Weapon, Continued

Sometimes just using a soap to cleanse skin is not enough to remove all the excess oil and dead skin cells – that’s where body scrubs can be extremely useful. Using a scrub can help clean skin’s surface and unclog pores which helps with cell turnover.

Body scrubs are essentially exfoliants that also rehydrate your next layer of skin, leaving it smooth, velvety soft, and providing you with a radiant glow. Especially useful when end-of-summer tans begin to fade or mid-summer sunburns begin to peel, the body scrub is also a natural remedy that scratches the itch for those with sensitive skin. By using some sort of whole-body exfoliation weekly, you will see a huge difference in the way your skin looks and feels.

Body Beautiful Pure Fiji Sugar Scrub
A sugar scrub, such as our Pure Fiji Sugar Scrub with fresh sugar cane crystals, contains naturally occurring alpha hydroxyl to gently buff away aging skin cells, polish your skin clean and unclog pores- leaving it glowingly healthy. Since a sugar scrub is all natural, there are no harsh side effects – this means you can use a sugar based scrub no matter if you have oily, dry, combination or mature skin.

Herbal Salt Scrub at Body Beautiful Spa in Phoenix
An alternative to sugar scubs are salt scrubs, such as the Herbal Salt Scrub. While the differences between the salt and sugar scrubs are few, the most significant difference is that sugar scrubs usually dissolve quicker than salt scrubs do. This makes them less abrasive than salt scrubs. In addition, sugar scrubs leave your skin tasting as good as it looks and feels!

Your Skin Care Secret Weapon!

One of skin care's best secret weapons is exfoliation. While many people know what exfoliation is on a basic level, or that it is something they “should” be doing, to many of them don't. Men often believe skin care treatments are for women only, and women often put it off as too time consuming to fit into their already too-busy schedule. This is too bad too since exfoliation can help lead them to having the smooth, clear, healthy skin they're looking for.

Your skin continuously undergoes a natural renewal process. When we are young, it takes approximately 25 – 28 days for our skin to completely renew itself. As we age, this renewal process slows down. The key to younger looking skin is to keep that renewal process in motion. This is where exfoliation comes in! Exfoliation oxygenates, brightens and refines the skin by revving up the skin’s metabolism, sloughing off excess dead skin, and ultimately helping to maintain cell turnover as you age.

Many people develop dull, lifeless looking skin because their stratum corneum (top-most layer consisting of dead cells) becomes too thick. Men and women should exfoliate once a week to remove the dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin. Accumulated dead skin cells make your face look bumpy, coarse, and even extremely dry. They also clog pores, trapping dirt and oils that become blackheads, pimples, and other facial blemishes.

Microdermabrasion
Exfoliation can be performed chemically or mechanically. Microdermabrasion, dermaplaning and salt scrubs are forms of mechanical exfoliation. Chemical peels, and quality home care products, such as Skin Scripts Glycolic and Retinol Pads with Kojic and Arbutin (available at Body Beautiful Spa in Phoenix) exfoliate chemically. Both chemical and mechanical exfoliation remove the top-most layer of skin, in order to remove all the fine hairs and dead skin cells and are excellent treatments for freshening and revitalizing skin.

Many don't think to do so, but did you know that you can and should exfoliate your scalp? It cleanses product build up away, relieves itchiness and flakes, and helps with dry skin. In order to exfoliate the scalp you can create a mixture of 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 3 tablespoons of conditioner, and 1 table spoon of olive oil. Mix that together then apply in sections to your wet scalp and massage well with your finger tips. Follow with shampoo and conditioner! Mmmm, didn't that feel good?
